Los Angeles Travel: Getting there with Virgin Atlantic

It’s been five years since I was last in Los Angeles. Time flies, but the love of a place never dies. Oh yeah, I’m a rhyming genius here today, folks. Two weeks ago I flew out to California to revisit this old and cherished friend of mine, a city that has always seemed magical and full of dreams. What’s that line from Pretty Woman? “What’s your dream? Everybody comes here; this is Hollywood, land of dreams. Some dreams come true, some don’t; but keep on dreaming – this is Hollywood.” Says it all doesn’t it?

Seven years ago I made my first trip out to LA and I kept going back, every chance I got, for two years. Flying from London, I tried out every airline you can imagine, but in the end there was one that stood out from the pack. Each time I flew to Los Angeles, I flew with Virgin Atlantic and each time I boarded I felt as if I was boarding with the Hollywood elite. Seemed I wasn’t the only one obsessed with this airline. I won’t go name dropping but I’ll just say I met some amazing people travelling back and forth so often, and that was in economy or premium economy- both classes being the most comfortable and pleasant I have yet to experience on a trans-Atlantic flight.

This time around on Virgin Atlantic to Los Angeles, I flew out in Upper Class. The service was so outstanding and above and beyond what’s required that I thought it deserved a special mention. It seemed every other moment I was taking notes on customer service with the idea that they would one day be applicable in my own business.

The experience starts in the lounge. This is a lounge where you can get your hair cut, your nails done, have a message, visit the bar or sit down for a full three course meal. In fact, I’m pretty sure you could do all at once if you so wished. These guys are all about making any experience happen and they’re willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. I had eggs royale, got my nails done and even played a game of pool with a friend I ran into while sitting for my first glass of champagne. Oh yeah, this is the good life. And I highly recommend getting to the lounge as early as possible to enjoy it all. Never before has waiting for your plane been such a fun experience.

Now about the plane. Virgin Atlantic offer flat beds in Upper Class, but in all honesty the seats are so comfortable it already feels as if you could sleep with the slightest adjustment. I tried so hard not to sleep. I wanted to enjoy everything from the movies on a massive personal screen to the afternoon tea that is served by trolley two hours before you land. But as I saw everyone having their beds turned down by the flight attendants, I was tempted to catch a few winks just to see how comfortable the experience would be. So that turned into a four hour sleep – the first time I have ever slept on a plane.

From the bar to cowshed lotions and potions in the bathroom, the fabulous amenities to the first cheeseburger I’ve had while being thrown through the air, this was an experience to remember. I arrived in Los Angeles refreshed and ready to go out. And boy, did we go out. But I’m getting way ahead of myself. There’s so much more to come!
