My camera, my history, my new travel companion: Olympus Pen E-P5

So here’s the long and the short of it – I’m obsessed with photography. Always have been, always will be, and the best part of my job, as a blogger, is that I get to put my addiction into action on a daily basis for FFG, Instagram, Pinterest, Twitter and Facebook. Photography, however, has changed a lot, even in my lifetime.

When I first moved to Europe at the age of 20, I had a SLR by my side at all times. My roommates used to joke that it was my official travel companion for my tour abroad. With this classic beauty I shot over 500 rolls of black and white film in one year. I developed the negatives in Italy and printed the pictures myself, in a darkroom, back at my university in the States. Those were the days when you had to wait to see what your camera had captured, hence the reason I went through over 500 rolls of film inside of one year. I took picture after picture of subjects and places in the hopes that at least one negative would give me a clear image of what it was I was trying to capture for all eternity.

At the age of 22 I was given my first digital camera. This was before the iPhone, or any phone for that matter, had a slick camera capable of capturing life’s important moments on the fly. Again, I was addicted. I carried my digital everywhere with me. It was a chunky little machine that would take up nearly a whole handbag, but there was no need for film, flashes or extra lenses. This was an all in one image creator and it seemed like the greatest invention on earth to me.

Now, in my thirties, I feel almost like an old woman talking about how much things have changed in only a decade. Digital cameras have improved by leaps and bounds and the average-every-day person is now capable of capturing moments in life with such clarity and creativity that I do believe all of us have begun to discover our hidden photography addiction.

This all brings me to what I believe to be one of my biggest steps forward in photography yet, my work with Olympus. I have recently been appointed an ambassador for Olympus in the UK and exposed to a whole new world of digital photography through the Olympus Pen E-P5. I received the camera over a month ago and was particularly excited to have this new tool in my hands as I was headed home to my favourite location – the Lowcountry in the USA.

There is no way I could possibly put into words how impressed I am with this little guy, who I’m now calling “my Olympian.” It is truly a hero in photography. And here’s how I know it’s a hero that will change everyone’s life, not just my own. I have barely taken this camera out of the Auto setting since I’ve had it, except to play with functions and experiment for future posts. You just don’t really have to in order to get a sensational photo. That, to me, means this is a camera to be considered by everyone from the clueless to the creative professional.

Over the next few months I’ll be taking you on a journey with my Olympus Pen. Every post that features photography from the camera will be clearly marked so that you can assess the camera’s talent, and trust me it’s talented. I’m hoping to show you around the functions of the camera and the different ways in which the Olympus Pen is revolutionizing digital photography.

Next time you hear from me, I’m going to go into a bit more detail as to why this camera is worth the purchase price and more. I’m compiling a top ten and I’m actually finding it hard to narrow it down to ten reasons… a good sign. Stay tuned.

This is just the beginning and I hope you enjoy your journey along with me and “my Olympian.”
