A calmer way to do Los Angeles at The Langham, Pasadena

As I write, I’m sitting on the grand terrace at The Langham, Pasadena. The sun rose minutes ago and the air is only just starting to change from a dewy morning crispness to a drier and warmer start to the day. I’m sitting alone. It appears not another soul has moved from their bed. I have a coffee to the left of me and a view over the lush gardens of the hotel in front of me. I was planning on sitting here and enjoying the start to the day, but instead felt a need to take out my laptop and write how I feel, in this moment, and it all started with the thought that I’ve been visiting Los Angeles for years now and never have I felt more relaxed upon waking. That’s Pasadena and many people will admit that there’s a reason this has been a getaway to bliss for the elite of LA for over 125 years. There is a calmness here. It’s a feeling of being settled. That’s the best way I know how to describe it. The town feels content. The hustle and bustle of LA is best left there, in Downtown Los Angeles, only a short drive away. A stay in this new world feels like the start of a new way to explore Los Angeles and I plan on taking full advantage of it. Long mornings and early afternoons on the scene downtown, and early evenings and nights in Pasadena for relaxing and attempting to shake off the day. I couldn’t have asked for a better couple of days of meetings and events, with this spot to come back to. And yes, every morning starts just as its’s starting now, with coffee and a sunrise. They’re just too stunning to sleep through.

Now, what do you need to know about the Langham Pasadena? The hotel is large, very large. 379 rooms, suites and cottages large. And every accommodation comes with a view that will leave you forever dreaming of your Pasadena experience. The rooms are old school. That’s me just being honest. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles. This is just a comfortable place to stay, with great staff, grand public areas and lush viewpoints of surrounding landscapes. The hotel is celebrating over 100 years in service, so they certainly have a history of keeping guests happy and I’m not just talking about us two legged folks. The four legged friends are welcome here too and enjoy a plethora of luxuries geared towards creating the ultimate pet pampering holiday. I saw a few pooches that looked like they were in heaven while I was in residence. Why oh why doesn’t Boomer like to fly?! The pets weren’t the only ones strutting and smiling while I called Pasadena home. My stay also just happened to coincide with a wedding, taking place on the great lawn of the hotel.

From my room, I watched as over a hundred guests made their way to the lawn for sunset to watch their friends tie the knot. I had the best view and you can bet your bottom dollar I sat my way through the whole thing. I only wish they had a PA that blasted their vows throughout the hotel so I could have been more involved. Only slightly joking. It was beautiful to witness and it is obviously a place that was dear to the couples’ heart. They weren’t alone, however. The minute I mentioned I was staying in the Langham Pasadena, on social media, I was inundated with messages from others that repeatedly visit the hotel and claim it’s one of their favourite annual getaways. I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to receive messages like that, from people who are all too eager to recommend their favourite place to sit, eat, swim, sunbathe or play tennis around the property.

Here’s a quick look at my stay, just as the city began to enter the first stages of autumn, with pictures from the hotel and visiting Pasadena proper. I will definitely be back and can’t recommend this enough for the next time you’re planning a trip to Los Angeles, but want a more relaxed angle to your stay!
