Style Update: The DIY NEXT dress

I’m not one to usually talk DIY on FFG, and don’t get excited as this isn’t a full tutorial for a DIY dress, but rather a suggestion for what’s possible if you love a combination of garments.

A couple of months ago I featured this crop top and skirt set that I bought from NEXT in the summer beachwear collection (the same set is now in the NEXT Sale…just FYI). I was absolutely in love with the print. It all felt very Dolce & Gabbana and I had to have it, despite a brief hold up with the styling. I am not 25 anymore and that has meant, for me, that showing off the midriff just really isn’t my preferred look.

So, I decided to do a little DIY work. I made the crop top and skirt combo into a dress. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy, and it only took me ten minutes. I basically used hemming tape to iron the two pieces together and presto – a dress was born. See, I told you there wasn’t much DIY involved here. I was just making a beautiful combo into something more personal and suited to my tastes. I was customising, in a matter of speaking.

I guess this is all just to say that shopping sometimes does require a little imagination. It doesn’t just start and stop with buying a garment. There is potential in every piece you add to your collection. In fact, before I ever give anything away to charity I always go through a process of evaluation in looking at whether a certain piece can be repurposed or altered to work in a new way to appear as if new to the wardrobe. Can you tell I’m a bit mental with wanting to keep everything all the time? I’m becoming a hoarder. It’s a problem.
